Guide to England's hills & mountains

Cairn Wansfell summit

Over many years there has been some confusion as to whether this point is Wansfell or Wansfell Pike. Bartholmew's have it as Wansfell Pike and quote an elevation of 1597', Wainwright switch's this around but agrees on height. Baddeley just gets more confused. Black's Picturesque Guide calls the high point Wansfell and gives it a height of 1591'. None however call it Baystones which on the current OS 1:25 000 scale map is placed north of the wall and given a height of 487 Metres (1597')which when you stand by the cairn south of the wall is obviously wrong as everything on the fell to the north of this is lower. Or am I wrong!!
