Swarth Fell photo

Summit cairns, Swarth Fell

Among the rocks on the summit plateau of Swarth Fell are this modest cairn and small shelter. The shelter opening faces south, so forms an excellent little suntrap, but won't give much protection from the prevailing southwesterly winds. Two kilometres away to the north, the much more extensive plateau of Wild Boar Fell catches the sun, both these hills being formed from almost flat-lying layered Carboniferous rocks giving the characterstic stepped hillsides with crags and level moors. Further away, to the west of the Dent fault, Harter Fell is part of the Howgills, formed from older rocks weathered to much more rounded forms.
